That was the headline on washingtonpost.com this morning introducing this story about, well, how much they love Bush in Utah. But they hate Dijon mustard.

I read this story with mixed feelings. I think it is sad how my fellow liberals feel that it is okay to blithely caricature the "fly-over" citizens in between New York and L.A.
That being said, it is sad to me that so many people in our country are blissfully, willfully ignorant about so many things. It requires a huge cognitive disconnect to not understand the relationship between one's own situation and national policies. Further, I naively did not think I would see the day when jingoism ruled the land and an embracing of other cultures or ideas outside the mainstream would be seen as unpatriotic and anti-American.
What saddens me the most, and will continue to, is that the greatest single opportunity in the history of the Western world to unite and address issues of not just national security, but international development, globalization, fighting poverty, and spreading freedom passed us by.
The world was behind us on 9/12/01 and the American people were ready to sacrifice whatever they needed to, including blood, sweat, tears, and cash.
All that has been wasted and can never, ever be regained...
